Update to PNG’s Response to Highway 37 Truck Rollover

Gas Leak Caused by Accident Now Stopped

Terrace, October 3, 2024, 8:00 pm

At approximately 12:45 pm today, a logging truck heading north on the Kitimat Highway (Highway 37) rolled over. The logs carried on the truck subsequently impacted PNG’s Mount Layton Hot Springs station, causing a gas leak. The truck driver sustained minor injuries, and no other injuries have occurred.

PNG immediately activated its Emergency Response Plan. The first priority was to ensure public safety. By 4:20 pm, PNG crews were able to safely stop the flow of gas to the damaged pipe and isolate the leak.

As of approximately 8:00 pm, one business customer and about 94 residential customers downstream from the Mount Layton Hot Springs Station have lost natural gas service, in the Mount Layton Hot Springs/Lakelse Lake area. The risk of further impacts to more customers at this time is very low.

PNG is working to restore service as soon as possible. Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) is being mobilized to the area. LNG is a safe energy source that PNG regularly deploys on an as-needed basis to maintain, or restore, service to customers.

Service is expected to resume by tomorrow afternoon. Crews are on standby, ready to undertake relights so that once service resumes, customers can enjoy the comforts of heat, hot water and their other gas appliances as soon as possible.

This is a dynamic situation, and the impacts and repair period duration depend on multiple factors including onsite safety considerations.

Highway 37 was closed while the gas leak was brought under control, and has now been reopened. Further traffic impacts may occur over the next several days as the accident site is recovered and gas infrastructure repairs are made.

PNG will provide updates as more information becomes available. For more information about PNG’s emergency preparedness and response, or for all incident updates, please visit the PNG website at www.png.ca
