Increased Smell of Natural Gas Present in Prince Rupert and Port Edward Areas Poses No Risk to the Public

June 30, 2022

Today, residents of Prince Rupert and Port Edward may notice the smell of rotten eggs, indicating the presence of natural gas.

There is no risk to the community.

As a safety measure, a harmless odourant is added to natural gas to give it the smell of rotten eggs. Extra odourant is present in the gas lines today, which is creating a noticeable smell in some areas.

At PNG safety is our number one priority. We are available to respond 24/7 at 1-800-663-1173.

Though the smell of natural gas present in the community today is not indicative of a safety risk, PNG encourages members of the public to take the usual safety precautions if they suspect a natural gas leak. These safety steps are:

  • Stop what you are doing;
  • Go outside; and
  • Call PNG immediately at 1-800-663-1173

PNG has deployed extra technicians to address the increased volume of reports of suspected gas leaks in the community.

PNG anticipates that the smell will no longer be noticeable by tomorrow, Friday, July 1.

PNG apologizes for this inconvenience and thanks members of the Prince Rupert and Port Edward areas for their understanding as we work to reduce the smell of this harmless odour.
